Varanger Arctic Kite Enduro

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Varanger Arctic Kite Enduro (VAKE) is a four-day long distance and endurance event for snowkite teams in Norway that has been held since 2009. Each team consists of at least two participants.

Racing conditions

The race runs over a length of around 210 kilometers across the Varanger peninsula. The starting point is Berlevåg . With the help of the previously known GPS data, 17 waypoints have to be approached according to their own assessment, and nine control points are passed, whereby a rest of several hours is mandatory at three points. The route leads via Vadsø to the destination Vardø .

Each team has to carry their equipment with them on two sledges, each team weighing at least 38 kilograms - from tent and sleeping bag to protective and reserve clothing, spare parts, plenty of food, compass and GPS device.

In general, the race must be stopped every day at 10 p.m. and the tent must be kept quiet for the night. Continuing your journey is only permitted on the following day at 7 a.m.

In 2017, the race was linked to the WISSA (World Ice and Snow Sailing Association) world championship in long-distance snow kiting.
