Residential house Varnhagenstrasse 38

The listed multi-family dwelling at Varnhagenstrasse 38 in Düsseldorf was built from 1966 to 1967 based on a design by the architect Thomas Fürst .

description

The clinker-clad facade of the four-storey building is vertically cubic. The basement is below street level. The window openings are landscape format with concrete-facing parapets. A strip of concrete marks the protrusion in the stairwell.

Art historical significance

The house is based on the Brutalist architecture based on the French, English and American models:

"Stylistically, there is an external relationship to Le Corbusier's buildings (Jaoul houses, Neuilly), the English brutalism of the early 1960s and Louis Kahn's buildings in the USA ."
