Varsha Nair

Varsha Nair (* 1957 in Kampala , Uganda ) is an Indian artist . She was educated at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda and moved to Bangkok in 1995 after moving from India to England and back.

One of the themes of her work is "the feeling of displacement that arises from multiple resettlements". Concepts of “home” and “belonging” are poetically presented in her installations as a relationship to a fleeting space. She was part of the first initiative group that started Womanifesto in 1997 , a biennial that presents international female artists in Thailand and is currently co-organizer of the organization.

She exhibits in various international museums and galleries, such as The Guild Art Gallery in Mumbai and Tate Modern .

She has been a guest lecturer in the Fine Arts course at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences since 2018 .

Works (selection)

In 2006, Nair performed a series of live interventions, titled Encounter (s ), which were performed in the Tate Modern's Turbine Hall. In collaboration with Tejal Shah (Bombay), she developed these interventions, in which the artists wore white embroidered straitjackets connected by absurdly long sleeves, and played in the huge architectural turbine hall. This work has also been performed in numerous other venues including the National Review of Live Art Festival in Glasgow and the Palazzo Carignano in Turin , Italy.

In 2009 Vasha Nair took part in the 2nd Beyond Pressure International Festival of Performance Art in Yangon.

Her 2014 work Undercurrent Yangon was performed at People's Park in Yangon , Myanmar.
