Varyag Island ( English ; Russian Остров Варяг Ostrow Varyag ) is a 16 km long island off the Ingrid Christensen coast of the East Antarctic Princess Elisabeth Land . It is located 2 km southeast of Hop Island in the group of the Rauer Islands .

Norwegian cartographers mapped it in 1946 as part of Hop Island using aerial photographs from the Lars Christensen Expedition in 1936/37 . Further aerial photographs were taken during the US operation Highjump , in 1956 during a Soviet Antarctic expedition and in 1957 and 1958 during the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions . Russian scientists mapped it as an individual island and named it. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia translated this designation into English. The further naming background has not been passed down.
