Vasegus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vasegus is the name of a Celtic deity . It was found only once on an inscription near Coimbra ( Portugal ) in the Roman province of Lusitania . This inscription bears the text:

B (ene) mer (enti) / Vasega / Mari / nianu / s anim / o live (n) s (!) / S (olvit) pono / mer (ito) / ma (xime)

According to Hermann Steuding, an Interpretatio Romana with Mercurius is assumed by Emil Hübner , who - probably wrongly - reads D / MER instead of B / MER and interprets it as Deus Mercurius . Steuding himself erroneously shortens the name (?) To Bmervasegus .
