Protected area for migratory birds |
The Vaseux is a dam on the Okanagan River in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia , Canada . It is designated as a Migratory Bird Sanctuary (in Germany about a protected area for migratory birds).
Origin of name
The name " vaseux " is French for "muddy" or "cloudy", which refers to the high suspended matter content of the water. The lake was probably shaped by French-Canadian fur traders .
The lake's name was misspelled Vasuix Lake on Joseph Trutch's maps drawn from 1866 to 1871 . Many years later it was written Vaseaux Lake ; In 1945 the Geographic Board of British Columbia corrected the official name to its current form.
geography
The town of Okanagan Falls is to the north and the town of Oliver is south of the lake. The lake is west of Mount Keogan while British Columbia Highway 97 runs along the east bank of the lake with a hairpin bend at Vaseaux Lake Rock Cut; many fatal accidents have already occurred here. The McIntyre Bluff , the Vaseux Creek and the existing there alluvial lie south of the lake; however, Vaseux Creek does not flow into the lake. Both the north and south ends of the lake are shallow; there is an oval depression in the center of the lake where the maximum depth is reached. The largest island in the lake is Hatfield Island. The water level in the Se is regulated by the McIntyre Dam.
