Vasilios III.

Vasilios III. or Basil III. ( Βασίλειος Γ΄ ), secular Vasilios Georgiadis ( Βασίλειος Γεωργιάδης ; * 1846 in Skutari ; † September 29, 1929 in Istanbul ) was Patriarch of Constantinople (1925-1929).

Life

Vasilios was born in Skutari ( Chrysopolis ) in 1846 . He studied theology and philology at the University of Athens until 1871. From 1872 to 1880 he was a lecturer at the Theological Seminary in Chalkis for Hermeneutics , Old and New Testament and Hebrew . He then went to Rome , Berlin , Leipzig , London and Vienna for study and work stays. In 1884 he became a doctor of philosophy at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

He returned to Constantinople and became director of the Spiritual Seminary of the Patriarchate in Balat . In December 1884 he was ordained a deacon and priest .

In 1896 he was a member of the delegation of the Patriarchate of Constantinople at the coronation of Tsar Nikolai II. In 1889 he became Metropolitan of Anchialus , in 1909 of Pelagonia . 1910 Metropolitan of Nikaia . Like many Greeks, he had to leave Asia Minor in 1923 .

On July 13, 1925, he was elected Patriarch of Constantinople by the Holy Synod . In 1928 he declared the right of the Patriarchate of Constantinople to ecclesiastical jurisdiction over all Orthodox patriarchates. In reality, this claim was only recognized by the Alexandria Patriarchate (for the Orthodox communities of Africa). In 1929 this claim was also implemented in a contract with the Church of Greece .

He died in Istanbul on September 29, 1929 .
