The Vauderens Tunnel is a 1975 meter long, double-lane railway tunnel on the Lausanne – Bern line of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). The tunnel, opened in 2001, is located in the canton of Friborg between the Siviriez and Vauderens stations . He was under the Rail 2000 built and replaced a shorter puncture of 1862, the profile for the IC2000 - Doppelstockwagen was too low.

New Siviriez - Villars-sur-Glâne line

The original plan was to build one of the 4 new lines on the 2000 line between Siviriez and Villars-sur-Glâne . This would have enabled a system time between Bern and Lausanne of one hour. For reasons of cost, the project was canceled from the first phase of Bahn 2000.

However, the Vauderens tunnel as a connecting structure in the south of this route had to be rebuilt to increase the clearance profile . The new tunnel was not only bigger, but also runs more directly between the two villages. This now enables higher speeds.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 9, 1998, and then, on May 18 of the same year, construction of an exploration tunnel began. The advance was 222 m per week and the breakthrough took place on November 3, 1999. Ten months later, on September 5, 2000, the shell could be completed. The installation of the railway technology began on September 11, 2000 with the laying of the rails. The western track was put into operation on April 19, the eastern one a week later. Since the timetable change on 10 June 2001 drive IC2000 - double-deck trains through the new tunnel.

1,775 m were excavated by blasting. In the open construction method (opencast tunnel) 50 m on the south portal and 150 m on the north portal were built. The tunnel is designed for a maximum speed of 200 km / h. For the time being, only 140 km / h can be driven due to the subsequent sections of the route.

The construction of the tunnel and the connection to the route network should originally have cost 84.8 million CHF. In the end, the major project was around CHF 13 million cheaper and cost CHF 71.4 million.

The old route was dismantled from the end of June 2001 and the former tunnel filled in. The backfilling of the tunnel lasted until April 2002, for the most part the excavated material from the new tunnel was used.
