status

Guma (Pishan)

The vaurian nightjar is only known from an immature female that was collected by Frank Ludlow in September 1929 in Taklamakan in Guma County (Pishan) in southwestern Xinjiang in western China and is kept in the Natural History Museum . Some researchers consider the Vauria nightjar to be a dubious taxon , especially since expeditions in the 1970s and 1990s only discovered specimens of the Chinese milker subspecies C. europaeus plumipes in the region in question. Possibly the Vaurien Nightjar could be an anomalous immature specimen of the Chinese milker or an extinct species. A DNA sequencing of the existing specimen has not yet been carried out. The region in the Terra typica is today badly damaged by overgrazing .
