Frank Ludlow (* 10. August 1885 in Chelsea , London ; † 25. March 1972 ) was an English botanist and Himalaya - researchers . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Ludlow ".

Live and act

Frank Ludlow was the son of a grocer. He attended West Somerset County School and Sidney Sussex College in Cambridge . In 1908 he gained at the University of Cambridge to the Bachelor of Arts degree in the natural sciences . During his studies he took courses in botany with Professor Harry Marshall Ward , the father of the botanist Frank Kingdon-Ward . In the following years he taught at Sind College in Karachi as a professor of biology and lecturing in English. In addition, he held the office of Deputy Rector. During the First World War he was stationed with the 97th Indian Infantry Regiment. In 1920 he became a member of the British Ornithologists' Union . From 1923 to 1926 he taught at Gyantse School in Tibet . In 1927 he retired to Srinagar , Kashmir, and undertook extensive research trips through the Himalayas , including Tibet and Kashmir . In 1929 he met the botanist George Sherriff (1898-1967), with whom he undertook several botanical and zoological expeditions in the eastern Himalayas and southeastern Tibet between 1933 and 1950. Ludlow and Sheriff discovered several new rhododendron taxa and collected over 7,000 specimens of birds, which are now in the Natural History Museum . From 1942 to 1943 he was stationed in Lhasa as an officer in the British Mission . In 1949 he moved back to England and devoted himself to the description of plant taxa, especially the genus of lark spurs , in the Department of Botany in the Natural History Museum .

Dedication names

Taxa such as Rhododendron ludlowii , Bhutanitis ludlowi and Alcippe ludlowi are named after Frank Ludlow .
