Frank Kingdon-Ward

Frank Kingdon Ward , actually Francis Kingdon Ward (born November 6, 1885 in Manchester , † April 8, 1958 in Wimbledon ) was a British plant collector . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Kingdon-Ward ".

Live and act

Frank Kingdon-Ward was the son of the Cambridge botanist Harry Marshall Ward and of Selina Ward b. Kingdon. He traveled through the Himalayas as a plant collector and visited Tibet , China , Burma and India , among others . Herbrand Russell, 11th Duke of Bedford , sponsored his first trips. He was later supported by Lawrence Johnston and Lionel de Rothschild , among others

He brought u. a. Rhododendrons , camellias , primroses, iris , the blue poppy ( Meconopsis betonicifolia ) and Lilium arboricola with to Europe. In 1952 he described his experiences in the book Plant Hunter in Manipur .

Honors

To him, the plant genus was named in honor Ward Aster Small family of the daisy family (Asteraceae) and Kingdon Wardia C.Marquand from the family of the Gentian family (Gentianaceae) named. Kingdon-Ward is also dedicated to the Pleione humilis 'Frank Kingdon Ward' variety. Norman Boyd Kinnear described the rose- tailed trogon ( Harpactes wardi ) in 1927 . He received the type specimen from Frank Kingdon-Ward, to whom he also dedicated the specific epithet .

The genus Wardenia King of the Araliaceae family, however, was named in honor of Charles James Hislop Warden , one of the authors of Pharmacographia Indica .

The Royal Horticultural Society honored him with the Veitch Memorial Medal in 1934 .
