Veliki park

The Veliki park ('Big Park') is a park in Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina .

location

The park is located in the Sarajevo-Centar municipality in the Mejtaš district , on the north side of Maršala Tita Street (Titova, 'Marshal Tito Street'), opposite the Presidential Palace . It extends within the train from Koševo, Džidžikovac, Tina Ujevića, and the Trampina alley.

The park stretches towards the city hills, is criss-crossed by numerous small paths, and is the largest green space in the city.

history

The park is located on the site of an old Muslim cemetery that was laid out by the Muslim Hajji Mustafa Čekrekčija at the end of the 16th century. Muslihudin Čekrekčija also had the Čekrekči Mosque in Baščaršija, Sarajevo's first domed structure, built in 1526 . He donated the property to the city and was buried here in an anonymous grave without stones.

With the establishment of the Austro-Hungarian administration , burials in the city center were prohibited for hygienic reasons. The complex was converted into a park from 1885 to 1886, extensively planted and in the manner of an English landscape garden and opened to the public. This vegetation makes up a beautiful old tree population today.

Its name refers to the Mali Park ('Small Park') to the west behind the Koševo , which also goes back to old cemeteries.

Memorial to the killed children of Sarajevo

Some of the centuries-old nišani (tombstones) of the former Čekrekčija cemetery have been preserved to this day.

In the lower part of the park, directly on Tito Street, there is a memorial to the more than 1300 children killed during the siege of Sarajevo (Spomenik ubijenoj djeci opkoljenog Sarajeva 1992–1995) . It is a round fountain basin with a diameter of around 10 meters and a two-part glass sculpture surrounded by small fountains. This object, created by the Sarajevo sculptor Mensud Kečo , symbolizes a mother protecting her child. The bronze fountain surround was made exclusively from grenade and ammunition cases that were collected in the surrounding mountains. The incorporated footprints come from friends of the deceased. It was erected in autumn 2008, inaugurated in May 2009, and in 2010 some stone steles were added, on which 521 of the children are listed by name. Further names should be added.

On the side of the Trampina there is another burial place, here are nine policemen who were killed during Operation Trebević '93 .

There are also two Sarajevo roses .
