Velký Tisý is a pond in the Czech Republic . With an extension of 317 hectares, it is the sixth largest pond in the country. It is located between the towns of Lomnice nad Lužnicí and Třeboň in the center of the Vitonian basin , at an altitude of 421 m nm. Its dam is 1850 meters long, 5 meters high and holds about 4 million m³ of water. Despite its size, the pond reaches a maximum depth of only about 3.4 meters.

The pond was built by the Rosenberg pond builder Štěpánek Netolický as one of the first large ponds in the region in the years 1502–1505. Štěpánek combined two older, smaller ponds, which were already on the Miletínský creek , to form a large structure. Between 1505 and 1520 the Golden Canal was built , which flows around the pond in the south and supplies it with water like all other ponds in the region. In addition, the Velký Tisý is also fed directly from the Lainsitz . Štěpánek's successor Jakob Krčín of Jelčany renewed the dam and enlarged the pond again. Pond farming has been practiced in the Velký Tisý pond since it was founded , the main traditional product being carp . The rearing basins on the northern edge of the Šaloun manor were already laid out by Štěpánek Netolický and are still in use today.

Together with the neighboring Malý Tisý pond and 14 other smaller ponds, the Velký Tisý has been under nature protection since 1957. The Velký a Malý Tisý National Nature Reserve covers a total of 615.54 hectares and includes the water bodies and the surrounding bank areas. Many of the native plants here are considered endangered. The area is of particular importance as a breeding and resting place for birds. The white- tailed eagle and around 150 other bird species breed here regularly . In late summer and autumn thousands of flocks of migratory birds rest here.
