The Vella Flat is a coastal plain in the northwest of Black Island in the Antarctic Ross Archipelago . It is located south of Lake Cole .

The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1999 after the geologist Paul Vella of the Victoria University of Wellington , who carried out stratigraphic surveys of the Brown Peninsula and Black Island between 1964 and 1965 in a campaign by Victoria University's Antarctic Expeditions .
