Venâncio Gomes da Silva

Venâncio Gomes da Silva († June 15, 1980 in Remexio , East Timor ), battle name Mau Seran , was an East Timorese politician and freedom activist.

Silva was one of the radical students from the Casa dos Timores . In 1974, after completing his agricultural studies, he returned to Timor and became a member of the Central Committee of FRETILIN (CCF).

In December 1975, Silva was arrested by the Indonesian invaders and taken to the Comarca prison . In 1979 he was released and lived in Dili , near the Comoro market . On June 10, 1980, FALINTIL units attacked targets in Dili. The Indonesians responded with retaliatory measures. Silva was taken from his home on June 15 by an APODETI member and taken to the Military District Command (Kodim) Dili. He was one of around 600 arrested. In the evening they flew Silva in a helicopter to Remexio, where he was shot. His body was placed on the floor and eaten by dogs.

In 2006, Silva was posthumously awarded the Ordem de Dom Boaventura .
