The Venediger Au is a park in the 2nd Viennese district Leopoldstadt , immediately northeast of the Prater star . It is bordered to the north by Lassallestrasse , to the east by the Venediger Au street of the same name , to the south by exhibition street and to the west by Praterstern .

history

The Praterstern around 1830

The Venediger Au is first mentioned in a document from 1377. However, the term initially referred to the area of today's Praterstrasse . From 1569 woodworkers and gamekeepers settled there. This settlement was soon renamed Jägerzeile , the term "Venediger Au" was used from then on for the area to the northeast. The new Venediger Au does not seem to have been used in the subsequent period; it appears on maps as a green area well into the 19th century. In 1872 the Praterstern was laid out at the end of the Jägerzeile (today's Praterstrasse) , into which seven streets converged in a star shape.

Towards the end of the 19th century, the “Volksprater” or “ Wurstelprater ” had developed south of the Venediger Au . Towards the end of the century, the Wurstelprater crossed the exhibition street to the north. A few amusement companies settled in the Venediger Au, most prominently the Circus Busch . In 1890, as part of the “Agriculture, Forestry, Industry and Art Exhibition”, a narrow-gauge park railway was built and called the “Schnackerlbahn”. It led from the Venediger Au to the south portal of the Wiener Messe with the rotunda and was the forerunner of the later Liliputbahn . The Venice in Vienna , which existed at that time, was located in the south of the Kaiserwiese area, despite the similarity of the name.

In the following decades, the Venediger Au entertainment district expanded to 48,250 square meters. In addition to the Busch Circus, there were riding stables, beer depots and various show booths. During the Second World War , these facilities were badly damaged by bombs, with the actual target mostly being the nearby, strategically important North Station . In May 1945 the Wurstelprater was almost completely destroyed. While the part south of the exhibition street was gradually being rebuilt until 1953, the decision was made to give up the Venediger Au area. The area was taken over by the City of Vienna and converted into a park with sports facilities and children's playgrounds in 1949. This was the largest garden repair at the time since the war, the budgeted costs amounted to 830,000 schillings.

Children's playground

Today the Venediger Au is a park-like green area with a children's playground and a day care center. In the north part (Venediger Au 11) is the youth sports facility Venediger Au . It offers facilities for soccer, high jump, long jump and shot put on an area of 7,610 square meters. The area is very easy to reach by public transport, as an exit of the U2 underground line ( Praterstern station ) was built in the park in 2008 .
