The spotted carpet clam ( Venerupis corrugata , syn .: Venerupis pullastra ), also called carpet clam , is a type of clam from the clams family (Veneridae) in the order of the Venerida .

features

The equilateral, elliptical, rhomboidal to egg-shaped housing reaches a length of 50 mm. It is slightly unequal, the vertebrae are well in front of the midline (based on the total length). The keys are strongly curved, the housing is quite thick. The dorsal margin is long and angled. The lunula is not clearly demarcated. It is elongated-heart-shaped and slightly longer on the right valve than on the left. The area (“tag”) is also not clearly marked, it is sunk and extends longer on the left flap than on the right. The external ligament extends from the vertebra about three-fourths the length of the posterior dorsal margin. The lock has three cardinal teeth in each flap. In the left flap the central central tooth is split or two-pointed. In the right valve, the middle and posterior cardinal teeth are split or two-pointed. There are no lateral teeth. The lock plate is narrow, the teeth protrude beyond the plate. Of the two sphincters, the back is slightly larger than the front. The surface line is deeply indented, the bay extends over half the length of the housing.

The whitish shell is thick-walled and very robust. The ornamentation consists of thin concentric beads and pits, as well as radial lines, which are clearly formed at the rear end of the case and give the surface a rough appearance. The inside edge of the housing is smooth. The periostracum is thin, smooth and has a silky sheen. It's beige with brown rays, spots, and zigzag patterns.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of the spotted carpet clam extends in the eastern Atlantic from Norway to South Africa . It is also found in the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea as well as the Canary Islands . The depth distribution extends from the tidal range to about 50 meters water depth.

The spotted carpet shell prefers to be buried a few centimeters deep in firm, gravelly sandy soils or sandy silt. It anchors itself with byssus threads on larger objects in the sediment, such as. B. on an older mussel valve or on a stone.

Taxonomy

The taxon was founded in 1791 by Johann Friedrich Gmelin as Venus corrugata . A more recent synonym is Venus pullastra Montagu, 1803. The species is therefore often found in older literature under the name Venerupis pullastra . But it was also added to the genus Tapes Megerle von Mühlfeld in 1811. Some authors consider the genus Venerupis to be a sub-genus of tapes . MollscaBase recognizes Venerupis as an independent genus.
