Venetian fair
The Venetian Fair is a biennial event in Ludwigsburg , the origins of which go back to 1768.
history
Duke Carl Eugen , Duke of Württemberg , traveled in Italy for several months in 1762 and 1767. There he found such great pleasure in the Venice Carnival that he simply imported the Venetian Mask Festival into the royal seat of Ludwigsburg. On January 19, 1768, he organized the first Venetian fair (also called St. Mark's fair or mask fair) on the Ludwigsburg market square. With the mask festival, which he had combined with a 14-day sales fair for luxury goods, he organized a spectacle that attracted a financially strong audience and dealers from home and abroad to Ludwigsburg. The Venetian Mass was held annually until Carl Eugen's death in 1793. Eight of the 26 events took place in Ludwigsburg, the other 18 after the change of the ducal residence to Stuttgart in 1775 on the Stuttgart market square. With the relocation to Stuttgart, the time also changed from Carnival to early summer.
In addition to selling goods, the event served the ducal court as a setting for self-presentation . In the evenings, there were theater performances, operas and masked balls. During masked promenades, the court society with masks mingled with the people without being recognized.
revival
In 1992 an association was founded with the aim of taking up the event in Ludwigsburg again. In 1993 the Venetian Fair was brought back to life and since then has taken place again in September on Ludwigsburg's market square. During the three-day event in September (around 50,000 visitors in 2012), around 1,000 jugglers, artists, musicians, mask and costume wearers transform the market square into St. Mark's Square in Venice. A large artist procession through the city center from the train station to the market square marks the beginning on Friday evening. After the procession, as well as on Saturday and Sunday, there is an art and craft market in Untere Marktstrasse and Holzmarkt. In the market square there is a variety of entertainment in a Venetian atmosphere.
