Ventôse decrees

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ventôse decrees are decrees issued by the National Convention on February 26 and March 3, 1794 during the French Revolution . According to the French revolutionary calendar , these days are in the winter month of Ventôse , which is what gave the decrees their name.

The Ventôse decrees ordered the property of the imprisoned enemies of the revolution to be distributed among the poor. This idea was supported by the radicals around Maximilien de Robespierre and Louis Antoine de Saint-Just . It was a first step towards the equal distribution of material goods. The Ventôse decrees were a reason for the conservative Thermidorians to overthrow the Robespierrists. They were never carried out and were finally dropped with the fall of Robespierre on July 27, 1794.
