Ventas Rumba (old German name: "Windauer Rummel") is a waterfall of the Venta River (German: Windau ) in Kuldīga (German: Goldingen ), Latvia . It is located near the center of the small town and is considered the widest waterfall in Europe . The water of the Venta falls over a dolomite barrier over a width of 240 meters , the height of fall is 180 to 220 centimeters, depending on the water level. The waterfall is almost twice as wide as the much better known Rhine Falls .

history

In the 17th century, Duke Jakob Kettler von Kurland had devices invented for the Ventas Rumba to catch leaping salmon . The waterfall became known as the place to " catch salmon from the air ". The fishing station was closed again after one of the Courland Hereditary Dukes fell into the water and drowned while trying to catch a salmon by hand.

tourism

Ventas Rumba is one of the main attractions of Kurzeme (German: Kurland ) and is well developed for tourism. South of the waterfall is the city center of Kuldīga with the castle park and numerous historical buildings.

The north bank of Ventas Rumba can be easily reached via the longest brick bridge in Europe ( Old Bridge ) , which dates back to 1874 . From here there is a beautiful view over the Venta. In the summer months it is possible to cross the waterfall on foot over the abrupt edge.

Bathing in the waterfall is possible, but there are no marked or guarded beaches. Fishing is not allowed in the immediate vicinity of Ventas Rumba to the migration of fish, mainly vimba and salmon , not to interfere.
