The Venus Bay , a 10 km wide bay on the north coast of King George Iceland in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It lies between False Round Point and Brimstone Peak .
The Scottish geologist David Ferguson (1857-1936) gave the bay the name Esther Bay after his exploration trip (1913-1914) . However, since the American sealer Esther is already namesake of neighboring geographical objects, the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee changed the name in 1960. The new namesake is the Venus , a two - masted schooner built in Woodbridge (New Jersey) in 1811 , which ran and sank on a reef in Esther Harbor on March 7, 1821 as part of the New York Sealing Expedition (1820-1821) . The crew was rescued by the escort ships Esther and Emerald .
