The largest inland body of water, Lake Vepriai , is used for recreation and fishing. In wetter areas, the deciduous forests dominate, the hills are covered by small forests.

history

Vepriai ( Wiepri ) on a map from the 16th century

The first castle mound for hiding on the Cedronas river bank could be used 1500 years ago. The tribal cemeteries ( pilkapiai ) of Kazlaučizna are from the 9th to the 12th century (they are located east of Vepriai).

The name ( Weppren ) was mentioned for the first time in 1384 in the chronicles of V. von Marburg. At that time the construction of the country roads was described by crusaders. At that time there was a wooden Lithuanian castle from 1384 on the mountain hill Vepriai, which Vytautas was conquered with the help of the Teutonic Order during the political riots in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania . The castle lost its defensive function and the courtyards were built next to it. The settlement with the radial plan was built by various noble families ( Kęsgailos , Šemetos ) on the Ukmergė- Kaunas road . 1770–1779 there were legal disputes over the court between Tyzenhaus and Michal Kossakowski .

In 1808 Antoni Tyzenhaus sold the farm to Józef Dominik Kossakowski . During the popular uprising in 1831, Emilie Plater lived temporarily with her soldiers.

In 1845 the parish of Vepriai was founded. In 1864 Vepriai became the center. In 1924 the Lower Agricultural School was founded in the nationalized courtyard.

Culture

In 1553 the first chapel Vepriai was mentioned in a document. The current neo-Gothic church was built in 1910. There has been a primary school since the 19th century.

In 1950 the Vepriai Middle School was founded. The agricultural specialists have been prepared in the Lower Agricultural School since 1924 . In 2004, the Vepriai Vocational Training Department of the Ukmergė Technology and Business School was opened.

Vepriai has been known for the Whitsun Fair and Stations of the Cross since 1846 . The Way of the Cross is 5.5 km long and has 35 stations (chapels and gates of the Way of the Cross). Instead of several wooden chapels, the walled chapels were built between 1882 and 1900. In 1963 almost all chapels were destroyed by the Soviet occupation government (except for those in the church area). The stations were built in 1989 as a result of donations from residents. There are a total of 21 walled chapels, 8 wooden gates and one iron gate.

In Vepriai there is a branch of the Ukmergė National Museum with over 5,000 exhibits. There is also a historical culture museum of regional studies researcher Jonas Žentelis.
