Loïc Wacquant
Loïc Wacquant (* 1960 in Montpellier ) is a French sociologist who teaches as a professor at the University of California, Berkeley and also conducts research at the Center de sociologie européenne (CSE) in Paris .
Life
Wacquant passed his bachelor's degree at the Lycée Joffre in Montpellier in 1977 , after which he studied with William J. Wilson at the University of Chicago and took his master's degree in 1986. After a research stay on the South Pacific island of New Caledonia , he was promoted to PH.D. in Chicago in 1993. PhD. In 1997 he was a MacArthur Fellow and obtained a second doctorate from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. Wacquant worked with Pierre Bourdieu for two decades , first as a student, then as a close collaborator. He taught at various universities as a visiting professor, most recently (2016/17) as Pitt Professor at the University of Cambridge .
He later processed his research as a participating observer among young boxers in a training center in the urban ghetto of Chicago in the book Body and Soul: Notebooks of an Apprentice Boxer ( Life for the ring. Boxing in the American ghetto ).
Wacquant's main research areas are urban inequalities, the American ghetto, the French banlieue , prison, and racism . He tries to open up Bourdieu's sociology for sociological urban research .
The scientist is also co-founder and editor of the interdisciplinary research journal Ethnography and was a permanent essayist and columnist for Le Monde diplomatique from 1994 to 2004 . He is also a member of the editorial board of the journal Actes de la recherche en sciences sociales .
