Verah ( care assistant in the family doctor's practice ) is an initiative for the qualification of medical assistants or members of other medical professions with professional experience in the family doctor's practice. The advanced training on Verah was developed and designed by the Institute for Advanced Training in General Practitioners in the German Association of General Practitioners in cooperation with the Association of Medical Professions . The Verah concept is recognized nationwide by the medical associations and the associations of statutory health insurance physicians as a qualification in outpatient care.

Currently (as of July 2017) there are almost 9,500 medical assistants who have received further training. In addition to the advanced training, the General Practitioners Association organizes Verah conferences several times a year , in which the content of the advanced training is discussed.

Goals and content of the training

As part of the training, the participants are further qualified for the non-medical activities that arise in the family doctor's practice. This includes case , wound and practice management. In addition to the practical work, home visits form a focus of the work. By bundling all competencies in the family doctor's practice, it is strengthened as a place of family doctor- centered care . The patients are looked after and cared for by familiar practice staff.

In order to complete the Verah advanced training course, candidates must

  • successfully attend eight advanced training modules,
  • submit a term paper (case description of a patient in their own practice),
  • submit proof of an internship or an internship over 40 teaching units,
  • successfully conduct an examination interview,
  • Complete 54 competence hours (teaching units).
