The Association of Independent Psychotherapists, Alternative Practitioners for Psychotherapy and Psychological Consultants (VFP) has over 10,800 members (as of March 2020) and, according to its own information, is not only the largest, but also the first professional association in free psychotherapy in Germany. It was founded in Munich in 1990 and represents its members in technical, professional and professional-political areas as well as in legal and public-related matters.

Members are usually not contractual partners of statutory health insurances or associations of statutory health insurance physicians and their services are not reimbursed by the GKV or only reimbursed as an exception in the non-contractual reimbursement procedure as part of a goodwill arrangement . "Free psychotherapy" also means that psychotherapeutic and psychological counseling activities can be carried out that are not subject to any legally anchored training and professional regulations and therefore do not have to belong to a specific scientific direction, doctrine or procedure . One result of this is that provided psychotherapy methods, some of which are scientifically recognized, are not recognized as billable services by statutory health insurances , despite their possibly proven effectiveness . This results in a corresponding focus of the association's work.

Tasks of the association

The association works with other professional associations and represents the interests of its members in relation to the authorities and legislative bodies as well as in public. It supports and promotes its members and advises them on professional issues. The association promotes the next generation of psychotherapists and psychological advisors through training and further education within the framework of the association school.

Another task is to present the profession to the public as well as to convey the principles of psychotherapy, mental healing methods and psychological counseling using suitable information media.

The association develops binding quality guidelines for its members with regard to training and professional practice and carries out qualifications and certifications, the criteria and rules of which are set by the board and a scientific advisory board.

Professional political activities

The association campaigns against the restriction of courier freedom through administrative measures and against the monopoly of this work area in favor of academically trained groups of people.
