The Association of Students from Kurdistan e. V. ( Kurmanci : Yekîtiya Xwendekarên Kurdistan; Kirmanckî : Yewîya Wendekaranê Kurdîstanî , YXK for short ) is an umbrella organization for Kurdish students in Europe. Numerous university groups in various major European cities belong to the association.
The YXK regards it as its main task to enable the student-university and general public in Europe to understand the Kurdish question and the conflict connected with it. In addition, awareness of an independent cultural identity in emigration, as in Kurdistan, is to be promoted and thus contributed to its preservation.
History and tasks
According to the YXK, the association was founded after a conference of 75 students from 16 German universities on December 12 and 13, 1991 at the Ruhr University in Bochum . This was preceded by the intention of organizing Kurdish students under an umbrella organization in Europe. According to the homepage, the umbrella organization currently includes university groups in Germany, France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland. There are also relationships with student groups in Kurdistan .
According to the company, regular activities include the Hüseyin Çelebi literary award event, the indoor soccer tournament in honor of the fallen comrade Delil Ates, various seminars, panel discussions, Kurdish film days in Hamburg and Cologne, information stands, concerts, summer and winter academies, delegation trips and Kurdish courses. Actions for the release of Abdullah Öcalan are also carried out on a regular basis.
The association magazine Ronahî
The Ronahî (dt. Light) is the quarterly magazine of the association and in the magazine it deals with texts by authors who are members of the YXK. Own political analyzes of current events, as well as topics under the rubrics: ecology, theory, gender, culture and scientific work are discussed.
PKK proximity
The Association of Students from Kurdistan is considered to be close to the banned underground organization PKK . The PKK fighter Hüseyin Çelebi , who was killed in October 1992 and who was actively involved in founding the YXK, was posthumously appointed honorary chairman of the YXK.
