The Association of the German Smoking Tobacco Industry eV, or VdR for short, is the association of manufacturers and importers of fine cut , pipe tobacco , chewing and snuff tobacco , cigars and cigarillos based in Berlin .

The association represents the interests of its predominantly medium-sized - mostly family-run companies - on a national and international level towards the public, governments and political parties, the authorities and the institutions of the European Community .

history

On November 24, 1920, the association was founded in Bamberg as a business association . After 1933, the free trade associations were dissolved by National Socialism . On March 20, 1946, the association was re-established in Vlotho as the "Association of smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco and snuff manufacturers in the British occupied zone of Germany eV". On January 1, 1954, the seat of the association was relocated from Vlotho to Bonn . On June 22, 1961 the merger with the Federal Association of Tobacco Importers takes place. Together with its sister association from the Netherlands, the Vereniging Nederlandse Kerftabakindustrie (VNK), the VdR founded the European Smoking Tobacco Association (ESTA) based in Brussels on November 27, 1990 . On October 1, 2015, the headquarters of the association will be relocated from Bonn to Berlin. Chief Executive is the Syndicusrechtsanwalt Michael von Foerster, Chairman of the Board Patrick Engels, Managing Partner of Pöschl Tabak GmbH & Co. KG .

tasks

The Association of the German Smoking Tobacco Industry has existed since 1920. It provides information for its members, gives legal assistance, especially for smaller members without their own legal department, and works for the tobacco industry in Berlin and Brussels. Other tasks of the VdR are the representation of interests, the exchange of views between the members and the preparation of statements on bills.

The VdR is a member of the umbrella organization " Federation for Food Law and Food Science ". The VdR is a partner of "Intertabak", the largest trade fair in the world, and has a permanent seat on the advisory board.

The VdR is consulted at public hearings in the German Bundestag on federal government bills relating to the tobacco sector. The association is entered in the lobby list of the German Bundestag and in the transparency register of the European Union. After the large cigarette companies left the VdR, the basis of the association is exclusively medium-sized.

VdR is known to the public as one of the supporters of the “ Pipe Smoker of the Yearaward , which has existed for 49 years. The previous 40 winners are personalities from politics, business, science or public life. The title holder should embody the typical characteristics of the pipe smoker: "Individuality, independence in thinking and acting, advocating personal convictions, self-confidence, openness, critical faculties, sense of pleasure as well as being down-to-earth and a love of freedom." The first prize winner in 1969 was Herbert Wehner . The other award winners were a. Helmut Kohl , Norbert Blüm , Norbert Lammert and Peter Struck . In 2018, Sonja Kirchberger, a woman, was honored as pipe smoker of the year for the first time .

The VdR donates the award for the Ludwig-Erhard-Preis for economic journalism , a cigar sealed in glass as a trophy for the winner.
