The Association of Liberal Academics (VLA) was founded on February 6, 1955 as a senior citizens' association of liberal students in Bonn . In Berlin, it celebrated its 60th anniversary on May 23, 2015 in the Parochialkirche . It unites academics who u. a. have worked in a liberal university group during their studies , regardless of whether they are members of the FDP or not. The VLA supports the liberal university groups nationwide both ideally and financially. Every year at Whitsun, the VLA holds a seminar and its annual convention - 2019 in Lübeck on the subject of "Construction site Europe: construction or demolition?"

The debate magazine " Liberale Perspektiven " appears twice a year, the newsletter for members three times a year. The academic editorial management of "Liberal Perspectives" has been with Marina Sedlo and Christian Krauss since 2019.

Alexander Bagus was elected as chairman (president) at Pentecost 2017 as successor to Brigitte G. Bremer (2013-2017) and confirmed in 2019. The previous Vice President Sven-Oliver Wolff was confirmed in office. Another Vice President is Sandra Drossel-Bück. Treasurer Manuel Gaul was re-elected. The secretary is Simone Lauffer. Ann Sophie Löhde and Marina Sedlo are represented on the Presidium as assessors.

The VLA awards the Arno Esch Prize every two years . In 2016 it went to Kiron Open Higher Education , in 2018 to the pro-European communication project WhyEurope eV The chairman of the jury of the Arno Esch Prize was Peter Menke-Glückert until his death in 2016 . His successor is the historian Günther Heydemann , who until 2016 was a professor at the University of Leipzig and head of the Hannah Arendt Institute for Research on Totalitarianism in Dresden .

The chairman of the jury "Liberal Student Group of the Year" is Steffen Glöckler. Prominent members include Gerhart Baum , Patrick Döring and Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger .

The VLA was or is the "Seniors' Association" of the following liberal university associations:

  1. 1950–1969 of the Liberal Student Union of Germany (LSD)
  2. 1972–1987 of the Liberal University Association (LHV)
  3. since 1987 of the Federal Association of Liberal University Groups (LHG)
