The Verbatim Corporation ( Latin verbatim , word for word 'or, literally') is a US-based subsidiary of the Japanese Mitsubishi Chemical company and a leading manufacturer of computer storage media , headquartered in Charlotte (North Carolina) .

history

Verbatim Corporation was founded in 1969 and was acquired by Mitsubishi Chemical in 1990. It belongs to their subsidiary Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co. Ltd. Verbatim operates worldwide with offices in America, Europe, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia. On June 30, 2007 Verbatim took over Smartdisk, one of the leading US suppliers of storage products, thus laying the foundation for the sale of its own external hard drives.

Products

The products Verbatim produces include:

The company has plants in the United States, Japan and Singapore. However, most of the production of CD-R (W) and DVD - / + R (W) is outsourced to licensees who produce on behalf of Verbatim according to Verbatim's manufacturing and quality guidelines. Provided they have the Advanced Azo / Super Azo / Metal Azo / SERL label, the products have the same quality properties as the "original" Verbatim products and are produced using the same materials and using the same processes.

Equivalent media are sold in parts of Asia under the name "Mitsubishi". The "Mitsubishi Black Diamond" DVDs that are sold in parts of Europe do not come from Mitsubishi Kagaku, but from Mitsubishi Electric .

Particularly in the CD-R segment and the “Pearl White” (8x) DVD product line, the companies mentioned also buy their own products. However, these products do not have the above labels and were previously listed under the DataLife product range instead of DataLifePlus. "Pearl White" 16x now have Mitsubishi media codes again, so they are original Verbatim and no longer purchased.

Since the end of 2006, Prodisc has been producing a blank media optimized for archiving purposes under the name "Archival Grade" ( sold as UltraLife in other countries ) on behalf of Verbatim . These are DVD-R blanks with Advanced AZO technology (8x writing speed), on which an additional reflective layer made of gold is applied and a particularly scratch-resistant lacquer is used on the data side. In Germany, this type of DVD is only available as "Photo Printable". Verbatim has both unprintable DVD-Rs and (unprintable) CD-Rs of this type, but Verbatim does not sell them in Germany.

The manufacturer PDO Europe sells both DVD-R and CD-R in Germany, which, according to PDO Europe, are identical to Verbatim's archival grade media and come from the same production.

Inner ring

With the help of the information on the inner ring, further information about the actual manufacturer can be obtained for some DVD + R and DVD-R blank types. However, this is only relevant for the production site in Taiwan, as two different manufacturers manufacture here on behalf of Verbatim.

Country of manufacture Possible manufacturer Code on the inner ring example

Stampercode

The stamp code is applied to the recording side during the production process. It comes directly from the device on which the blank was made. The stamp code is located near the - usually transparent - inner ring. However, it can only be read from a certain angle.

The stamper code for blanks from Verbatim usually has a structure similar to ZD… -DVR-…. or also ZC… -DVR-…. (Example: ZD0001-DVR-X47B ).

Optical storage techniques

The optical media manufactured and purchased using Verbatim technology or Taiyo Yuden use various patented techniques.

Metal Azo (CD-R)

Metal Azo is a deep blue azo dye for writing speeds of up to 16x. Metal Azo is still occasionally used on audio CD-Rs.

Super Azo (CD-R)

Super Azo is used at higher speeds (24x and higher). In Japan, Super Azo CD-Rs are also sold as "Sonic Azo".

Metal Azo (DVD +/- R)

Metal Azo is a purple azo dye for writing speeds of up to 2x / 2.4x.

Advanced Azo (+) (DVD +/- R)

Advanced Azo was introduced with 4x DVD + R and retained with 8x DVD + R. The 16x DVD + R use Advanced Azo +.

SERL (CD-RW, DVD +/- RW)

The rewritable data carriers use the Super Eutectic Recording Layer ( SERL ) technology, which is supposed to regenerate itself when erased (unlike media from other manufacturers).

SERL is used for media that are written to at less than approx. 6000 1 / min. This is the case with CD-RW media designed for 4x or 10x / 12x speed. For DVD + RW media, the maximum speed is 4x.

Special audio CD-RWs are also produced using the so-called TeRL ( Tellurium Alloy Recording Layer ) technology.

Advanced SERL (+) (CD-RW)

Advanced SERL is used for media above the 6000 rpm limit. CD-RW media for 24x or 32x speed and DVD-RW media for 6x speed are produced with Advanced SERL.
