The connecting canal is a waterway on the eastern outskirts of Emden . It connects the Ems-Jade Canal with the Ems Side Canal and the Fehntjer Tief .

The canal was built to complement the Dortmund-Ems Canal in order to save inland shipping from having to travel through the Emden harbor . It is 2.0 kilometers long, 15-20 meters wide and 1.7-2.0 meters deep. The lowest headroom is 2.9 meters. Due to these dimensions, the connecting canal is only used today by sport shipping and for excursions . The jetties of two water sports clubs and a boat workshop are located south of the Fehntjer low .

The Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the connecting channel .

Connecting lock

The difference in height between the Ems Lateral Canal and the Ems Jade Canal is compensated for by a lock . The lock chamber is 65 meters long, 8 meters wide and has an additional central gate. The drop height is 2.4 meters. The lock and the only bascule bridge on the canal are operated and monitored from the Emden boiler lock .
