Probable structure of the prosthetic group in sulfhemoglobin.

Verdoglobin or sulfhemoglobin is an organic chemical compound and belongs to the group of cyclic tetrahydropyrroles, it contains sulfur and a hemoglobin ring system. Felix Hoppe-Seyler called it sulfur hemoglobin . According to the nomenclature of gravels and Kaeske is the name Verdoglobin S .

Sulfhemoglobin is a relatively stable, nonfunctional hemoglobin derivative that is sometimes formed during the oxidative breakdown of hemoglobin. It then remains in the cell. Unlike hemoglobin, it is light green.

Verdoglobin appears in the urine of people with severe burns and turns it green if sepsis from Pseudomonas infection is present. Verdoglobin can be determined fluorimetrically . A sulfhemoglobinemia (the occurrence of sulfhemoglobin Verdoglobin or in the blood) can be used as, in rare cases undesirable effect by certain drugs can occur. The clinical symptoms are usually less severe than in methaemoglobinemia , although sulfhemoglobin is formed irreversibly and cannot take over the transport of oxygen.
