from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Association of Writers and Artists Vienna was founded in 1885 on the initiative of Ida Barber u. a. founded by Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach , Bertha von Suttner and Marianne Hainisch . The association represents a piece of the cultural history of the country and the monarchy of Austria . It is the oldest women's movement in Austria.

history

The founders of the association fought against the injustice of women and founded a pension fund for aging writers and artists who are unable to work. In the first few years, writers, musicians and painters from all parts of the monarchy could become members.

There were three categories of association participation: (1) full members, (2) donors and (3) supporting members. Betty Paoli and Paula Preradović were u. a. Members of the association. In 1897 the category of "external members" was created, which included writers like Clara Viebig , Gabriele Reuter , Grazia Deledda , Alberta von Puttkamer and Ricarda Huch . The most famous donors were Emperor Franz Joseph I , Crown Princess Stephanie, Duchess Marie Antoinette of Parma, Prince Johann II von und zu Liechtenstein , Katharina Schratt and the Queen of Romania. Baroness Bettina Rothschild also supported the association financially.

At the beginning there were salon readings, and literary-musical lecture evenings were held, which enjoyed increasing popularity. In 1889 the association's assets were more than 10,000 guilders, in 1893 it was already more than 20,000. Around 1910, 24 members were drawing old-age pensions from the pension fund. After the First World War , the assets of the association and the pension fund were destroyed by inflation and it was difficult to maintain the association. Despite everything, anniversaries were celebrated and art exhibitions were held. The association's literary tasting newspaper has existed since the beginning of the 20th century and is still published three times a year with works by its members. It was always adapted to the times.
