Founding history

The association was founded in 1995 by Johann Pesti. The former Ombudsman of the Republic of Austria Herbert Kohlmaier was the first president. At the end of his term in office, in 2000, he wrote about the founding idea:

I was fascinated by the idea from the start, namely to lend a voice to the media consumer and that's what we are all about. In doing so, I benefited from what I was able to gain in knowledge and experience in previous years. The main thing is to counter undesirable developments that are unmistakably present. In a largely commercialized media landscape, quality losses are increasingly being registered - an outpouring of dubiousness, a tendency towards tastelessness and also the unhesitating representation of violence. It has become necessary to do something together against this. "

- Herbert Kohlmaier

An EU-wide network of the organization is sought. The chairman has been President Hans Högl since 2011

Projects and Actions

ORF Public Council - candidacy and criticism

For the election of the ORF Public Council 2010, "representative institutions" and organizations from the fields of education, youth, the elderly, parents, family, sport and consumers were asked to propose people for direct voting. The Association for Media Culture nominated its president, Hans Högl, for the field of education. Six of 35 public councilors are elected through direct voting, in which all fee payers are entitled to vote. Hans Högl criticizes this election mode in a guest commentary in the daily newspaper Die Presse :

Parties and associations dominate the ORF bodies. The fee payers bear two thirds of the ORF budget and can elect six out of 35 public councils. It's cheeky how three million fee payers are fobbed off here .. "

- Hans Högl
