The Heyn bookstore in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee is a bookstore and publisher in Carinthia.

history

The Heyn bookstore was originally founded in March 1868 by Rudolf Bertschinger as the Bertschinger bookstore in Kramergasse in Klagenfurt. In 1872 Johannes Heyn joined the company as a partner and in 1881 took over the bookstore as the sole owner. Johannes Heyn started publishing as early as 1872 .

In 1885 the "First Carinthian Concert Directorate" was founded. In 1911 the son Hans Heyn took over the bookstore. After his death in World War I, his sister Helene Zechner, née Heyn, continued the business.

National Socialism was welcomed with open arms by the Zechner family, which is oriented towards Germany's nationality . Helene Zechner's son Kurt Zechner participated along with his two brothers actively in the July coup . All three were arrested, but released (and received the blood order ) in the run-up to the annexation of Austria and its integration into the “Greater German Reich” . During the Second World War, Helene Zechner continued to run the business alone, since the Zechner brothers served in the Wehrmacht. The publishing activity was stopped during this time. The son intended for the bookstore takeover died in the war. Kurt Zechner - as a trained mechanical engineer - was prepared for the book trade succession after the denazification process and his brother Herbert Zechner took over the family farm.

In 1952 Helene Zechner handed over the bookstore to her son Kurt. Shortly thereafter, the bookstore was rebuilt and publishing activities resumed. The "First Carinthian Concert Directorate" became the Mozart community, whose office was the Heyn bookstore until the end of 2005. In 1962 it was rebuilt again and the range of specialist books expanded, particularly in the fields of medicine, technology and education.

After Kurt Zechner's death in 1977, his son Volkmar Zechner ran the bookstore and his brother Gerd Zechner continued the Heyn publishing house.

The Heyn publishing house focuses primarily on art and history, dialect poetry and literature from Carinthia and has already won several prizes for its elaborate art volumes thanks to the commitment of Therese and Gerd Zechner. In 1993 the publishing house received the state award for the prizes for the most beautiful books in Austria for the production of the Markus Pernhart volume “The appropriation of landscape and history”.

In 1981 it was rebuilt again and the book presentation and range of books expanded. In 1984 the sales rooms of the youth book department and the novel department were expanded.

On April 14, 1998 the Heyn-Tech branch opened in Wiesbadener Strasse. During the subsequent renovation in May 1998, 60 square meters of retail space was gained on the 1st floor. At the same time, the office space was expanded.

After almost three years of business activity, at the end of February 2002 the entire technical range of "Heyn-Tech" was relocated back to Kramergasse.

In April 2003 Volkmar Zechner retired and his son Helmut Zechner took over the management of the family company Heyn in the fifth generation. After two years of planning, the Heyn bookstore was completely rebuilt at the beginning of 2006 in just six weeks of construction.
