Publishing clerks work in newspaper and magazine publishers as well as book publishers . It was a training occupation. In 2006, the apprenticeship as a publishing clerk was replaced by the newly created job profile of digital and print media clerk . The training for the profession Verlagskaufmann lasted depending on the school two to three years. There were special publishing classes at public vocational schools in 30 German cities for publishing salespeople, which were attended to complement their in-company training.

Important operational and school-related contents of the training were work organization, marketing , sales , advertising , editing and proofreading , rights and licenses , manufacturing , procurement and storage , commercial planning, management and controlling .
