Vern Gosdin
Vern Gosdin (born August 5, 1934 in Woodland , Alabama , † April 28, 2009 in Nashville , Tennessee ) was an American country singer.
Life
Gosdin gained his first musical experience in a family environment as a member of the Gosdin Family Gospel Radio Show , which was broadcast almost daily in the early 1950s. In 1961 he moved to California with his brother Rex, where they played bluegrass music as the Golden State Boys with Don Parmley . A little later, Chris Hillman joined, and the group renamed The Hillmen . In 1964, Chris Hillman joined the then little-known Byrds as bass player . His country style was to have a major impact on the West Coast band in the years that followed. Gosdin turned down an offer from the Byrds, preferring to continue with Brother Rex as The Gosdin Brothers . In 1967 they achieved a medium hit with Hangin 'On . A year later the duo split.
Gosdin withdrew from the music business, worked as a glassware seller and spent his free time with his family. In 1976 he tried to get back into the business. He went to Nashville and recorded Hangin 'On again . This time the song reached the top 20. The successor Yesterday's Gone was able to place in the top 10 a year later.
In the following years, Vern Gosdin had numerous other hits. In 1984 he reached the top of the country charts with I Can Tell by the Way You Dance (You're Gonna Love Me Tonight) , 1988 with Set 'Em Up Joe and 1989 with I'm Still Crazy . His frequent changing of labels was remarkable. He was signed to Elektra, Capitol, Ovation, AMI, Compleat and Columbia in succession. With the beginning of the 1990s, his classic country style was increasingly less in demand. He continued to produce albums and perform. The great successes did not materialize.
