Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center
The Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center is a prison ship off the coast of the South Bronx at Hunts Point on the East River in New York City .
The ship is part of the Rikers Island prison complex , the largest prison complex in the world, operated by the New York City Department of Correction (NYDoC). It was in New Orleans for 161 million dollars built and brought to New York 1,992th An initiative by David Dinkins wanted to provide cheaper accommodation for prisoners . The ship should also relieve the overcrowded Rikers Island, it offers space for 800 prisoners in 16 dormitories and 100 single cells . It is named after Vernon C. Bain, a prison director who was killed in a car accident. The ship also served at times as a New York youth prison . There is a large kitchen, a legal library, leisure and relaxation rooms and a basketball court on the top deck. Since the prison ship is not securely attached to the shore, Coast Guard regulations required the permanent presence of one of three crews including an officer, an engineer, and a machinist until 2002, which cost $ 650,000 annually.
