David Dinkins (2007)

David Norman Dinkins (born July 10, 1927 in Trenton , New Jersey ) is a former American politician of the Democratic Party . He was the 106th  Mayor of New York City and the first African American in that office.

Dinkins held his first political mandate from 1965 to 1967 as a member of the New York State Assembly . He then held several offices in the New York City Council before he was elected borough president of Manhattan in 1985 to succeed Andrew Stein . He held this post from 1986 to 1989. On November 7, 1989, he prevailed in the election for Mayor of New York as a Democratic candidate against the Republican Rudolph Giuliani ; In 1993 Giuliani was able to beat and replace him. He remained the last democratic mayor of the city until the election of Bill de Blasio in November 2013.

For the first time in the city's history, Dinkins managed to stop the rising crime spiral. He achieved a staff increase in the police service of almost 25 percent.
