Versant technology is mainly used for complex data and large to very large amounts of data ( big data ); there are more than 150,000 Versant installations worldwide.

The Versant Corporation was bought by the Actian Corporation in late 2012

history

Versant Corporation was founded in the USA in 1988. Since 1996 Versant has been traded on the NASDAQ under the symbol "VSNT" . In March 2004 the merger with the German software company Poet Holdings Inc. took place. CEO of the Corporation is Bernhard Wöbker, he succeeded Jochen Witte in 2011. In December 2008 the open source object database technology "db4o" was taken over. Software development in Pune (India) was discontinued at the beginning of 2010, since then development has been carried out exclusively in Hamburg. The roadmap presented in November 2011 focuses on product development on offers for big data applications and the associated data analysis in almost real time. In late 2012, after the rejection of an offer from Unicom Systems Inc., Versant announced the acquisition by Actian Corporation, the commercial developer of the Ingres and Vectorwise relational databases . The transaction closed in December at an estimated purchase price of $ 37 million.

Products

Versant provides extensive NoSQL technology. It combines the architectural advantages of NoSQL key / value DB with the ability to process structured, partially structured and unstructured data in various transaction scenarios. The engine enables the import and processing of large amounts of data. This is a prerequisite for real-time queries from analytics systems. Versant currently sells two commercial object-oriented databases ( OODBMS ): the "Versant Object Database" and "Versant FastObjects". Since 2008 Versant has also been offering the open source object database technology "db4o".

  • "Versant Object Database" for complex Java and C ++ applications, especially when high demands are placed on failure safety, concurrency and performance and the database is very large.
  • "Fast Objects" for C ++ and .NET applications with complex object models. Fully integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio.
  • "db4o" for Java and .NET applications

The Versant object database is available for the Windows , Linux , Solaris , and HP-UX operating systems . The Versant DB can be integrated e.g. B. in C ++ or Java programs, since the end of 2011 there has been a Versant implementation of the Java Persistence API , a Java client for the Versant Database Server (preliminary version).

In contrast to a relational database management system ( RDBMS , e.g. Oracle ), with the Versant object database, complex logical models can be stored, read and modeled directly without having to map them in relational tables, which saves software developers a lot of work. In addition, considerable performance advantages can be achieved with complex data in hierarchical models. Online schema evolution makes it possible to make changes to the data model even in productive environments without downtime.

Areas of application

The object databases Versant be used when the amount of data or complexity goes beyond the capabilities of relational database systems, for example in the areas of telecommunications , transport / traffic , online gaming ( MMOG ), government / defense, medical and other industrial applications.
