Versbox (VBX) is a progressive hip-hop crew from Stuttgart that puts all of their tracks under a free license . They often play at political demonstrations and their music is also very critical of society .

With the release of the first single in 1997, the tracks were published freely on the Internet. All three albums as well as various other tracks and remixes can be found on the website in OGG and MP3 formats for free download. All pieces are published under a Creative Commons license (BY-NC-SA). Creative mash-ups or remixes of the tracks, playing on web radios and inquiries from concert organizers are expressly requested by the band. Versbox is GEMA-free and autonomous as a band and takes care of booking, production, sales and artwork itself.

history

In 1997 the rappers "Tycoon", "Cruz +", "rap.so.die" and "Chills" founded the hip-hop band Versbox together with the DJs "Gambit" and "Mad Skill". "Chills" left the band in 2000. They released the albums harvest23 and Koyaanisqatsi in 1999 and 2003 . After this, in 2004 "rap.so.die" and "Mad Skill" separated from the band in order to become more independent. Both still produce music. The album Schattenboxen followed a year later . In 2006 they came across the “Pimp my rights” sampler from CCC Regensburg .

style

Versbox conveys an international, clear and direct message with the German-language texts and is therefore difficult to compare with commercially oriented radio and TV hip-hop or the new German battlerhyme scene.

The band raps in German , records their songs on their own and publishes them under a free license. The texts criticize the ruling consumer society and the music industry and are shaped by free-thinking and pacifist ideas. Versbox was mentioned in the book Fear of a Kanak Planet by Hannes Loh ex-member of Anarchist Academy as the spearhead of a new rap movement.
