The defense area is the area assigned to a military unit within the framework of an operation plan, which can also be maintained against enemy pressure. As part of a flexibly managed defense , parts of the defense area can be given up at least for a limited time, as long as the key area ordered is held and the context of the defense as a whole is preserved, including the connection to the neighboring associations .

Within the defense area, the commander, as part of his deployment plan, assigns the subordinate units position spaces for mobile combat or, in exceptional cases, a position of shallow depth. Positions are also planned on the flanks and in the rear part of the defense area and explored by reserve forces , if necessary also prepared to intercept and stow the attacking enemy in front of these positions, e.g. B. as a prerequisite for the success of your own pre-planned counterattacks.

In the rear part of the defense area, the assigned combat support, command and control forces are assigned their own operational areas within the framework of spatial planning .
