Dancing Rabbit Creek contract
The Dancing Rabbit Creek Treaty was a land assignment agreement between the Choctaw and the United States of America . It was closed on September 27, 1830 on the Choctaw tribal land in Chukfi Ahihla Bogueim ( choctaw for creek where the rabbits dance ) in southwest Noxubee County , Mississippi . It was ratified by the United States Congress on February 24, 1831 .
Negotiations have been on the part of the Choctaw of the Native American tribal leaders Greenwood LeFlore , Mushulatubbee out and Nittucachee, the interests of the United States were Colonel John Coffee and Secretary of War John Eaton represented and before the Council of the Choctaw and a gathering of 6000 Choctaw guided.
With the conclusion of the contract, the Choctaw exchanged around 45,000 square kilometers of their traditional settlement area in what is now the state of Mississippi for 61,000 square kilometers in the Indian territory in what is now Oklahoma . After a series of smaller land cession contracts at the beginning of the 19th century, the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, the last great land transfer agreement of the Choctaw and also the first treaty was that under the Indian Removal Act (Engl. For Indians Resettlement Act was closed). The Choctaw became the first of the five civilized nations to be relocated to Oklahoma by the government. This relocation, which killed about 2500 Choctaws, became known as the Path of Tears .
