Treaty of Rome (1924)

The Treaty of Rome of January 27, 1924 was an agreement between the Fascist Kingdom of Italy and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes that revised parts of the Rapallo Border Treaty , which created the Free State of Fiume in 1920 .

Italy and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes agreed that Fiume, today's Rijeka in Croatia , could be annexed by Italy, while the Serbian-Croatian-Slovenian state received Sušak . The port should be managed jointly.

Immediately after its independence, the state of Fiume was recognized by the great western powers USA , France and Great Britain . Riccardo Zanella was elected President on April 21, 1921 . The fascist governor Francesco Giunta (1887–1971) forced Zanella to resign in March 1922. On September 17, 1923, the Italian general Gaetano Giardino was sent to Fiume by Benito Mussolini to restore order. At the same time, Mussolini began to negotiate with the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

After the treaty was signed, it was deposited with the League of Nations Treaty Series on April 7, 1924 . A joint commission regulated the details of the border on July 20, 1925.
