Gaetano Giardino (born January 24, 1864 in Montemagno , Asti , † November 21, 1935 in Turin ) was an Italian marshal and senator .

Life

Giardino completed an officer training at the Military Academy in Turin . In 1882 he was promoted to lieutenant and then served in various Bersaglieri associations. The general staff training graduated from Giardino as a course Best. He served in Italian East Africa and took part in the Italo-Turkish War .

When the First World War broke out , Giardino became a general and commanded a division and then two army corps . This was followed, at the suggestion of Luigi Cadorna , a short period of service as Minister of War from June to October 1917, which was connected with the appointment as Senator. He had misjudged the situation at the front, a few days after the outbreak of the Battle of Caporetto , the government of Paolo Boselli had to resign. Giardino returned to the front under Chief of Staff Armando Diaz and in mid-1918 took over the 4th Italian Army on Monte Grappa , where he prevented an Austro-Hungarian breakthrough into the lowlands in the Second Battle of the Piave .

In 1926 Gaetano Giardino was appointed Marshal of Italy for his services in the First World War . Marshal Giardino's grave is on Monte Grappa.
