Armando Diaz , Duca della Vittoria since 1921 (born December 5, 1861 in Naples , † February 29, 1928 in Rome ) was Chief of Staff of the Italian Army from November 1917 until the end of World War I in autumn 1918 .

Life

His parents were Ludovico and Irene Cecconi. His father, last colonel in the Arsenal of Venice died 1871st

Diaz was regimental commander in the Italo-Turkish War in 1911 . At the outbreak of the World War, Diaz was chief of the operations department of the Italian General Staff.

After the Battle of Good Freit , he followed General Luigi Cadorna to the post of Chief of Staff . Cadorna had led the army in the battles of the Isonzo with outdated methods and the most brutal disciplinary measures. Diaz led the Italian soldiers in a much more humane and modern way. He did not insist on decisions along the main battle line , but instead set up his units at a low level , especially in the Battle of the Piave in June 1918. In this way, he ruled the battle at all times. He also thanked the members of the "Inter-Allied Propaganda Commission" set up by the British Crewe House for the victory .

On October 24, 1918, exactly one year after Good Friday, he opened the Battle of Vittorio Veneto , which led to the end of the war in Italy. He verified the Treaty of the Armistice of Villa Giusti on November 3, 1918. In 1919 he was succeeded by Pietro Badoglio on the post of Chief of Staff.

1921 Diaz was by King Victor Emanuel III. ennobled and received the title of Duca della Vittoria . In 1924 he was appointed " Marshal of Italy ".

Diaz sympathized with the fascists after the war and became minister of war under Benito Mussolini .

Armando Diaz's tomb is in the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Rome , together with that of his wife Sara . Next to it is Paolo Thaon di Revel buried. In Bozen , Armando Diaz is dedicated to the road that leads from the headquarters of the mountain troops to the west.
