João I marries Philippa of Lancaster

The Treaty of Windsor was signed between Portugal and England on May 9, 1386 . Under the new Avis dynasty , which had ruled since 1383, he renewed the alliance between England and Portugal, which had been concluded in 1373 and which was never terminated later, making it the oldest still valid diplomatic alliance in Europe.

Both states assured themselves of their unbreakable loyalty in the long run. This "eternal, indestructible" friendship was valuable for the independence of Portugal. King John I of Portugal confirmed this will by marrying Philippa of Lancaster , the sister of the future King Henry IV , on February 2, 1387.

The germ of the alliance was laid in 1275 when the two states joined forces. On August 14, 1385, they jointly defeated the Kingdom of Castile, ruled by John I , in the Battle of Aljubarrota .
