layout

The cover shows one of the members with corpsepaint and a bare chest in the forest with blurred flames in the foreground in daylight. The musician is surrounded by a circle with sigils .

On the back there is a picture of the three members with corpsepaint and weapons on a ruin at night next to the saying God's throne is ours. Turn away from Jesus Christ - the loser. Heil Satan and an illustration by Euronymous von Mayhem .

Music style and lyrics

The band plays "grim, cold Black Metal" on their debut, which is comparable to the music of the Scandinavian bands, but more melodic and faster. The production is a bit "tinny". toroddfuglesteg from Prog Archives sees strong Burzum influences and Venom references as well as a few influences from the Zeuhl , which he considers coincidental. Turov from Vönger Musikmagazin sees in the music style “pretty much all stylistic Black Metal elements that had already appeared before Euronymous died. This means the brutality of old Mayhem things ['Universe of Black Devine'], the soulfulness of the Burzum releases ['My soft Vision in Blood'] and the technical sophistication of Emperor ['Eye to Eye at Armageddon']. Almost every song contains this element, which results in a great variety. ”In addition to fast and slow passages, synthesizers and acoustic guitars are also used ( Weeping Midwintertears ). The song Kingdom of Darkness, on the other hand, begins with Dies irae, sung like a Viking , according to Gino Filicetti of Chronicles of Chaos, above the background noise of an invasion with screaming women.

The tracks Beneath a Steel Sky and A Spell of Dark and Evil , written and recorded by Rune, deviate from Black Metal , which are ambient music with a piano solo on top.

The lyrics are about the end of the Trinity and the saints, satanic rituals, the worship of Satan and his heralded rule in the coming dark age.

Reviews

Frank Stöver described Abigor in Voices from the Darkside as the best and most professional Black Metal band in Austria after Summoning and their debut as a great release. Satan's Stole My Teddybear's John Chedsey wrote that although the band is firmly rooted in what he sees as the most parodic outward signs of black metal ("silly" corpsepaint and the photographs in the liner notes ), they are demonstrating on Devastation / Invoke the Dark Age , what a good, solid black metal album is about. The album consistently transports a dark, thoughtful, angry and terrifying atmosphere. It convinces with Abigor's ability to write sharp lead guitar runs and vary high tempos and musical "attacks". The album is a good start if you don't know Abigor yet, and the best known to the band. Turov from Vönger Musikmagazin also called it the best Abigor release, "a classic of Black Metal" and one of the best albums of the genre. The album was “arranged very carefully”: “The two guitar tracks complement each other perfectly, the occasional keyboard does the rest. You could say that this album is more complex than Emperors ' Anthems ... ', even if the sound is very raw and unpolished. "

According to toroddfuglesteg from Prog Archives , the album lacks the qualities of other bands of the time such as Burzum, he himself always thought Abigor was a third-rate black metal band and saw himself confirmed by this album; it is only suitable for incorrigible black metal fans. However, the eight-minute Kingdom of Darkness is a very good song. According to Gino Filicetti of Chronicles of Chaos , Havoc / Invoke the Dark Age appears as a typical Black Metal album when first heard, but when listened more closely it is raised to a higher level of being through certain unfolding nuances. He also named Kingdom of Darkness as one of his favorites.
