The Enchanted April is a 1922 novel by the British author Elizabeth von Arnim .

At the beginning of the 1920s, a small advertisement in the Times led two women in their London club to their own, albeit the same decision: to spend April in a villa for rent in Italy on the Gulf of Genoa , far from their burdens . In order to be able to finance this venture, they are looking for two more women who would like to spend this vacation with them. In this way a community of convenience of four people from different strata of English society is formed. During the stay in the villa "San Salvatore", the atmosphere that prevails there creates a bond of girlfriends and the women find both themselves and their husbands.

The author spent the spring and summer of 1921 in the Castello Brown above the port of Portofino to do research for the novel.

Adaptations

The novella was filmed in 1991 by Mike Newell (German title: Enchanted April , original title: Enchanted April ). Performers were Miranda Richardson , Joan Plowright , Josie Lawrence and Polly Walker . Joan Plowright received the 1992 Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and an Academy Award nomination in the same category for her role as Mrs. Fisher .

In 2003 Matthew Barber reworked the original into a play that was performed at the Belasco Theater on Broadway and has also been shown in Germany since 2005/2006.
