The company was founded in 1953 by the pharmacist Helmut Vetter (1920–1999) as the pharmacist Vetter & Co. Arzneimittel GmbH Ravensburg . Vetter had already had a chemical-pharmaceutical laboratory since 1945 and, since 1950, also operated the traditional Marienapotheke in Ravensburg as a tenant . Initially, the company mainly produced cachets, especially the self-developed stomach remedy "Ullus capsules". The rapidly expanding company moved into a four-story building in the center of Ravensburg a year later. In 1958 Vetter opened his own pharmacy ( Apotheke Vetter am Marienplatz), including a perfumery and health food store. During this time, Vetter began to deal primarily with the airtight and watertight sealing of the drugs it produced itself. From 1965 the company began to manufacture solid and liquid pharmaceuticals including their packaging. Since 1975 amplifies be aseptically filled finished inject produced. In the United States founded in 1983 Vetter its first foreign subsidiary Vetter Pharma-Turm Inc. in Yardley ( Pennsylvania ) that sales in the US and Canada took over. In 1984 the name was changed to Vetter Pharma-Fertigung GmbH & Co. KG .

In 1988 the plant in Ravensburg received approval from the American FDA , which opened up the US market for the company. At that time, the pharmaceutical service provider had around 350 employees. Two years later, Vetter brought a new two-chamber syringe system onto the market that contained freeze-dried and therefore long-lasting drugs in one chamber and a suitable solvent in the second chamber; The components are mixed during application. In the next few years, production was largely automated. A second German production facility was established in Langenargen in 1996, which also received FDA approval in 1998. The growing company was expanded in 2004 with the construction of a second plant in Ravensburg-Süd (Mariatal industrial area). The production facility was completed at the end of 2006 and received manufacturing approval from the Tübingen regional council at the beginning of 2007, and FDA approval one year later. At the end of 2007, Vetter began building a new factory for final packaging at the Ravensburg Süd location, which was fully commissioned in May 2009. In addition, a laboratory for production-related analyzes was set up at the Ravensburg Süd location in 2009. In 2009 the company founded a sales subsidiary. At the end of 2011, the company opened a development site in Chicago. Small amounts of active ingredient are filled there during the development of new drugs for clinical studies. After the development phase, the drugs are transferred to the commercial locations for filling in large numbers. The first transfer of this kind from the USA to Germany took place two years after the development site in Chicago was opened.

In May 2012, Vetter completed its new center for optical control and logistics, which is equipped with technologies for generating renewable energies and improving energy utilization. The location was expanded and modernized a short time later - it now houses around 800 workplaces. Since 2014, Vetter has been opening up the Asian market with a sales office in Singapore. A year later, a branch was also opened in Japan. In 2015, Vetter also announced extensive investments in modernizing and expanding its locations in and around Ravensburg. In the same year, the pharmaceutical service provider was recognized by the state of Baden-Württemberg as a volunteer-friendly employer.

The increasing customer demand for support in the area of drug development and the need for further developed IT systems against the background of digitization led to the expansion of the Ravensburg site in Schützenstrasse in 2016. In 2016, Vetter began building a new production building at the Schützenstrasse location. In the same year, the company presented its first plans for a long-term investment project in the USA with the aim of offering its global customers an additional production facility for their drugs in the USA. In 2017, Vetter laid the foundation stone for a new administration building in which around 1000 employees will have their workplaces from 2020. The pharmaceutical service provider also joined the Diversity Charter initiative. The initiative's mission is to promote diversity in companies and institutions in order to create a working environment that is free from prejudice against employees - regardless of gender, nationality, religion or ideology, among other things. Also in 2017, the company received several awards for its corporate health management. It received the award for healthy companies in the gold category as well as the Federal Prize of Germany's Most Active Companies 2017. Vetter also made it into the final selection at the Corporate Health Award (CHA) and has since been able to carry the corresponding seal of excellence. In 2018, the company broke new ground in the field of injection. The Vetter Open Innovation Challenge started under the motto Injection 2.0. Multidisciplinary teams of participants examined the applicability of digital trends to injection processes. Promising ideas were pursued as part of the innovation process and the winning team of the competition was also awarded prize money of 10,000 euros. In addition, the pharmaceutical service provider relied on expanded capacities and modular production in the field of secondary packaging and built a new building for this purpose at the Ravensburg Vetter Süd location.

Managing directors

The two managing directors are supported by an independent advisory board: Udo J. Vetter has been chairman of this advisory board since 2008. He is also vice-president of the association Die Familienunternehmer and, since 2019, president of its European counterpart, the European Family Businesses.
