The VfL Herford (officially: Verein für Leibesübungen Herford eV 1881 ) is a sports club from Herford .

history

The club was founded in 1881 as the Jahn Herford gymnastics club . In 1930 this merged with the gymnastics club Vorwärts Herford and the gymnastics association Stiftsberg to form VfL Herford. This club belonged to the Workers' Gymnastics and Sports Association . When the National Socialists came to power in 1933, the association was banned. A planned merger with the Herford boxing club was rejected by the city administration, so that VfL Herford dissolved on June 2, 1933. After the end of the Second World War , VfL Herford was re-established.

Handball

In field handball , VfL Herford was one of the founding members of the then first-class Oberliga Westfalen in 1947 and was relegated after the first season. In the hall, the Herford team reached the Westphalia championship in the hall for the first time in 1960 and failed in the semifinals with 4: 5 to Grün-Weiß Dankersen . Four years later, the Herford team qualified again for the Westphalian finals, but failed there in the group stage.

Soccer

The footballers at VfL Herford had their first successful period when the team played in the district class between 1955 and 1972. In 1965 and 1968, the Herford runners-up behind SG Bünde 08 and SuS Holzhausen , respectively , while the team came third in 1966 and 1969. This was followed by many years in the Herford district upper house. Only in the 1988/89 season did VfL play in the district league B. In 2005, they were promoted to the district league again, followed by promotion to the regional league five years later under coach Stefan Studtrucker . After the direct relegation, the Herford was promptly passed into the district league A. Since relegation in 2015, the VfL footballers have been playing in the district league B.

The home games are played in the stadium by the fire station , where artificial turf is played. The stadium is located in the northern part of the city center and has space for 2,500 spectators. The federal highway 61 runs north of the stadium , while the Werre flows west of the stadium .
